Alan Rusbridger

Alan Charles Rusbridger (born December 29, 1953 in Lusaka , Northern Rhodesia ) is a British journalist . He was editor-in-chief and publisher of the British daily newspaper The Guardian from January 13, 1995 to May 29, 2015 .

Life

Alan Rusbridger was born in Lusaka, Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia ), the son of B. E. and G. H. Rusbridger, Head of Education for Northern Rhodesia.

When Alan Rusbridger was five, the family returned to the United Kingdom. He attended school in Guildford and the Cranleigh School boarding school. He studied English literature at Magdalene College , Cambridge and worked for the Cambridge News during the holidays. After graduating, he worked there until 1979.

In 1982 he married the educationalist Lindsay Mackie. They have two daughters (* 1983 and * 1986)

After the Cambridge News he went to The Guardian as a reporter and wrote, among other things, the daily column . In November 1985 he had a brief stint as a royal reporter, during which time he followed the Prince and Princess of Wales in Melbourne , Australia . At that time he was already using a modem to send data to London. In 1986 he left the Guardian to become a television critic for the Observer before moving to Washington to serve as editor of the short-lived London Daily News in 1987 .

After returning to the Guardian , he started the "Weekend" supplement in 1988. In 1995, he became editor of the Guardian. In the years that followed he dared to publish the Guardian's content first on the Internet ( web-first principle ) and then in the daily newspaper.

On May 29, 2015 Rusbridger retired as editor-in-chief at the Guardian. His successor is Katharine Viner . Since October 2015 he has been Principal of Lady Margaret Hall at Oxford University .

Alan Rusbridger was to succeed Liz Forgan as chairman of Scott Trust Limited in September 2016 . The Scott Trust Limited is the owner of the Guardian Media Group . Due to the Guardian's financial crisis blamed on Rusbridger, he resigned the presidency on May 13, 2016.

Rusbridger has written three children's books and is co-author of the BBC drama Fields of Gold with Ronan Bennett .

In Germany, Rusbridger is  best known for the surveillance and espionage affair - triggered by the whistleblower Edward Snowden .

Rusbridger is a Fellow of Nuffield College, Oxford , and a visiting professor at Queen Mary, University of London . Since 2004 he has been chairman of the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain .

Rusbridger supports the international non-profit climate protection campaign 10:10 . He is also a passionate amateur pianist.

Awards

Rusbridger received honorary degrees from the University of Lincoln in 2009 and from Kingston University in January 2010.

In 2010 he was selected to deliver the annual Andrew Olle Media Lecture in Australia .

Alan Rusbridger and Spiegel editor-in-chief Wolfgang Büchner received the special award of the European Press Award 2013 in London for his “perseverance and courage” reporting on the NSA scandal .

In September 2014, the Right Livelihood Award Foundation awarded him the Alternative Nobel Prize “for the development of a global media organization that is committed to responsible journalism in the public interest and, against great resistance, reveals illegal actions by companies and states” . The award was presented on December 1, 2014.
