Albert Hauck

Albert Heinrich Friedrich Stephan Ernst Louis Hauck (born December 9, 1845 in Wassertrüdingen , † April 7, 1918 in Leipzig ) was a German Lutheran theologian and church historian .

Life

Albert Hauck came from a proven milling family Hauck from Wassertrüdingen in the 17th and 18th centuries . His father was Albert Hauck (1810-1854), who worked as a lawyer and notary. From 1864 he studied theology in Erlangen and from 1866 in Berlin , where he was influenced by Leopold von Ranke . In 1868 he passed the first state examination in Ansbach. In 1870 he became vicar in Munich, in 1871 in Feldkirchen and in 1875 received the parish in Frankenheim .

Hauck taught since 1878 as an associate professor of church history and Christian archeology at the University of Erlangen . Since 1882 he was a full professor of church history and Christian archeology there. In 1889 he was appointed professor of church history at the University of Leipzig . From 1898 to 1899 he was rector of the university.

In 1899 he received the Verdun Prize . A year later he was accepted as a corresponding member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . Since 1891 he was a full member of the Royal Saxon Society of Sciences in Leipzig. In 1894 he was elected a corresponding member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences .

His most important work is the church history of Germany (1887–1920). It is considered a standard work in church history. He was also the sole editor of the third edition of the Real Encyclopedia for Protestant Theology and Church .

Among his children was the theology professor Friedrich Hauck (1882–1954) and his grandson was the historian Karl Hauck (1916–2007).
