Alberto Martín Artajo
Alberto Martín-Artajo Álvarez (born October 2, 1905 in Madrid , † August 31, 1979 ibid) was a Spanish politician .
From July 20, 1945 to February 25, 1957 he was Spanish Foreign Minister .
He was born in Madrid in 1905. After studying with the Jesuits of Chamartín, he completed his law degree at the University of Madrid . He had been a lawyer for the State Council since 1930. During the republic he was a close associate of Ángel Herrera Oria , director of the Catholic newspaper El Debate, and a member of the National Catholic Association of Propagandists.
When the civil war broke out, he switched to the side of the rebels. He advised the Technical Committee and the Nationalist Ministry of Labor as a lawyer and participated in the drafting of the Spanish judiciary. As President of the Technical Commission of Catholic Action, he was appointed Foreign Minister in 1945 to succeed José Félix de Lequerica in order to promote a change in the external appearance of the dictatorship.
After consulting the Primate, Cardinal Enrique Plá y Deniel accepted the ministry and left his position in Catholic Action. In 1952 he toured the Middle East .
In August 1953 he signed the Concordat with the Holy See . On September 26, 1953, he and his American counterpart, Ambassador James Clement Dunn, sealed the signing of the so-called Madrid Pacts, three independent agreements between Spain and the United States. During his tenure, Spain also joined the United Nations in 1955 .
