Albrecht Fuess

Albrecht Fuess (* 1969 in La Tronche ) is a German scholar of Islam .

Life

He studied history and Islamic studies at the University of Cologne (1996 master's thesis on the German community in Egypt between the world wars) and at the University of Cairo . As a scholarship holder of the German National Academic Foundation (during which one year research stay as visiting scholar at the Orient-Institut Beirut and at the School of Oriental and African Studies ) he received his doctorate in Cologne in 2000 with a thesis on the Syro-Palestinian coast in the Mamluk period (1250-1517) . After working as a freelancer in the foreign editorial office of ZDF in Mainz , he became a research assistant at the chair of Islamic studies at the University of Erfurt in 2002 . From 2007 to 2009 he was “Le Studium” - Fellow, the science college of the “Région Center”, at the Equipe Monde Arabe et Méditerranée ( Université de Tours ) on a research project to compare the systems of the Ottomans, Safavids and Mamluks in the 16th century. Since 2010 he has been a professor for Islamic studies at the University of Marburg .

His main research interests are the history of the Middle East (13th – 17th centuries), the cultural and social history of the Mamluks, Islam in Europe and contemporary Islamic youth cultures.
