Alewtina Alexandrowna Bilinkina ( Russian Алевтина Александровна Былинкина ; born October 28, 1921 in Moscow ; † July 29, 1951 at the Klyuchevskaya Sopka ) was a Soviet volcanologist and geologist .

Life

Bilinkina enrolled in 1939 to study at the Faculty of Geography at Lomonosov University . In the course of the evacuation of the university during the Second World War , however, she moved to the Moscow State Pedagogical Institute VI Lenin , where she graduated with honors in 1942. She then carried out geomorphological studies in Siberia before finding a job at her alma mater and becoming a junior scientist at the Faculty of Geography at Lomonosov University.

In 1948, Bilinkina began to work at the Kamchatka Volcanological Station . At that time the Schiwelutsch broke out, and she carefully observed and analyzed its activities. Together with colleagues, she climbed the summit of the Tolbachik in 1949 . The Klyuchevskaya Sopka, on the other hand - the highest active volcano in Eurasia - was not eruptive at the time. Only a few fumaroles were registered. Bilinkina conducted research on its slopes, examined the crater edges, cinder and ash cones and mapped the cooled lava flows in the area. She was considered a very passionate scientist who went about her work with great enthusiasm and willingness to take risks.

In the summer of 1951, the station organized a multi-week excursion to Klyuchevskaya Sopka. Together with Nikolai Ogarkov, Bilinkina descended into the crater on July 29 to collect gas samples and take temperature measurements. In the late afternoon she was fatally injured in a rockfall and carried away into lower terrain. It took Ogarkov two hours to reach her body. The other scientists learned of her death the next morning.

On the Klyuchevskaya Sopka a new crater, which was formed on November 20, 1951, bears her name in honor of Alewtina Bilinkina. Most of her academic work was published posthumously .
