Alex Bell

Alexander "Alex" Bell (* 1882 in Cape Town , South Africa ; † November 30, 1934 ) was a Scottish football player who mainly played in defensive midfield and was one of the pillars in winning the first two championship titles in the history of the English record champions Manchester United .

Life

Born in South Africa to Scottish parents, Alex Bell later grew up in the Scottish city of Ayr , where he learned to play football in the youth teams of Ayr Spring Vale and Ayr Westerlea . As a young adult, he played at Ayr Parkhouse in the Scottish Amateur Football League and contributed with his services not insignificantly to the fact that his club finished second at the end of the 1902/03 season and in the second division for the following 1903/04 season has been recorded. At that time Bell was already under contract with the English second division club Manchester United, who had signed him during the 1902/03 season.

While Bell only made eleven appearances in his first two second division seasons in 1902/03 and 1903/04 , he was a regular player from 1904/05 and as such played a major role in the promotion to the first division in the following season .

In the following years Bell was also one of the key pillars in the first successful epoch of the Red Devils , who between 1907/08 and 1910/11 won the English championship title and the FA Charity Shield twice, as well as the FA Cup once .

On March 16, 1912 Bell completed his only international appearance for the Scottish national team against Ireland (4-1) .

Before the 1913/14 season, Alex Bell moved to the Blackburn Rovers and won another championship title that same season.

After finishing his active career, Bell worked in the coaching staff of Coventry City (1921/22) and then at Manchester City .
