Alexandros , Greek Ἀλέξανδρος Α , (* July 20 . Jul / 1. August  1893 greg. In Tatoi in Athens , † October 12 jul. / 25. October  1920 greg. In Athens) was from 1917 to 1920 King of the Hellenes .

Life

Alexander was born the second son of King Constantine I of Greece and his wife Sophie of Prussia . He graduated from the Athens Military Academy Scholi Evelpidon in 1912 and participated in the Balkan Wars as an officer of the artillery part.

Due to his pro-German attitude, King Constantine I had to abdicate in 1917 and leave the country together with Crown Prince Georg . Alexander then ascended to the Greek throne as Alexandros I. He ruled from June 12, 1917 until his death.

On November 4, 1919, he married Aspasia Manos , who came from the ancient Greek nobility , which made him very popular with the people and continues to this day. His constitutional attitude and his support for the Entente also earned him great popularity.

His daughter Alexandra (1921–1993), who later became Queen of Yugoslavia , was born five months after his death. Alexander died of blood poisoning from a monkey bite and was buried in the Royal Cemetery in Tatoi .

In his honor, the Thracian city of Dedeağaç was renamed Alexandroupolis in 1919 .
