Alexander Binsteiner (born May 1, 1956 in Wasserburg am Inn ) is a German geoarchaeologist .

Life

In his diploma thesis on the chert deposit of Baiersdorf in the Kelheim district , Lower Bavaria, he gained his first experience in the mining archeology of prehistoric mines.

In the service of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation (BLfD) he was then for many years local excavation manager in the flint mine of Arnhofen near Abensberg in Lower Bavaria . He concluded these first excavation campaigns in Arnhofen with several publications.

Konrad Spindler appointed Binsteiner in 1993 as chief geologist in the Eismann project at the University of Innsbruck .

Between 1999 and 2001 Binsteiner examined the " Feuersteinstrasse between Bavaria and Bohemia", the oldest trade route in Europe, for the BLfD Landshut .

From 2003 to 2007 he carried out a geoarchaeological survey for radiolarite deposits in the Kleinwalsertal on behalf of the Institute for Prehistory and Protohistory of the University of Innsbruck. He discovered a mesolithic radiolarite mining on the "Feuerstein" in the Gemsteltal, which is considered to be the oldest and highest situated flint mine in Europe.

His best-known projects are also the case of Ötzi , the fall of the Mondsee culture , the Venus von Willendorf and the exploration of the Stone Age in the greater Linz area with the nearby Danube-Enns Paleolithic , which contains sites of Homo erectus , the Neanderthals and the early Homo sapiens .

Then he dealt with the Neolithic river trade on the Danube and the expansion of the end-Neolithic Cham culture to Upper and Lower Austria.

Binsteiner, who wrote numerous essays and monographs on Stone Age topics, was also the curator of several Stone Age exhibitions, including “Riddles of the Stone Age between the Danube and the Alps”, which was shown in Linz and Regensburg in 2011.

He was also a lecturer for "European Silex Deposits" at the Universities of Innsbruck and Vienna.

Today he lives and works as a freelance geoarchaeologist and author in the Bohemian Highlands near the border with Lower Austria.
