Alexander Dallas Bache (born July 19, 1806 in Philadelphia , † February 17, 1867 in Newport , Rhode Island ) was an American physicist .

Life

Alexander Dallas Baches parents were Richard Franklin Bache (1784–1848) and Sophia Burrell Bache, b. Dallas. Alexander Dallas Bache was the oldest of their nine children. He was a great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin , a grandson of Richard Bache, and a nephew of George M. Dallas .

He received his education at the United States Military Academy at Westpoint . In 1825 he became a lieutenant in the topographic engineering corps , in 1827 professor of mathematics at the University of Pennsylvania and in 1836 president of Girard College in Philadelphia. He later went on a trip to Europe to get to know the educational institutions there and organized the school system in Philadelphia from 1838 to 1842. In 1843 he replaced Ferdinand Rudolph Hassler as director of the United States Coast Survey .

In 1845, Bache was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . In 1850 he was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science . In December 1861 he was admitted to the Russian Academy of Sciences as a foreign corresponding member . In the same year he became a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .

From 1863 Bache was President of the National Academy of Sciences . Bache did a great job as superintendent of the North American coast survey.
