Alexander Knox

Alexander Knox (born January 16, 1907 in Strathroy , Ontario , † April 25, 1995 in Berwick-upon-Tweed , Northumberland ) was a Canadian actor .

Life

Knox went to England as a stage actor in 1929 . In 1931 he got his first small film role, but his work in England in the 1930s was mainly focused on theater work. It wasn't until he came to the USA in 1941 that his film career began. He put in his first American film as an opponent of Edward G. Robinson in The Sea Wolf the "Humphrey Van Weyden". Three years later he played in Darryl F. Zanuck patriotic mass production Wilson in the title role of the American president Woodrow Wilson , was it Nominated for an Oscar in 1945 and won the Golden Globe Award .

In 1943 Knox married the American actress Doris Nolan (1916–1998). They remained a couple until his death in 1995. In the early 1950s, the actor was blacklisted in Hollywood ; He was no longer offered roles and went back to England in 1954, where he continued to work as a film actor. He took his last film role in an American film in 1985: In Ted Kotcheff's film Eine Liebe in Montreal he played Senator Hornby.
