Alexander Schnell (born February 24, 1971 in Berlin ) is a German philosopher .

Life

Alexander Schnell grew up in West Berlin and Heidelberg . After he had passed the Abitur and the Baccalauréat at the French Gymnasium in Berlin in 1989 , he studied engineering and philosophy in Paris (apparently he was influenced in particular by the teaching of Jean-Toussaint Desanti and Marc Richir ).

After several years abroad in Sofia ( Bulgaria ), where he got his first teaching experience at the University of “St. Kliment Ohridski ”, he took up a position as a research assistant or assistant in Paris. In 2001 he received his doctorate summa cum laude under the direction of Françoise Dastur on the subject of "The Problem of Time with Husserl (1893-1918)" . From 2002 to 2007 he taught as “Maitre de Conferences” at the University of Poitiers . The topic of his habilitation was: "Shaping the Transcendental Philosophy: Fichte, Schelling, Husserl, Heidegger" (under the direction of Jean-François Courtine ).

Between 2007 and 2016 he was “Maitre de Conferences” at the University of Paris-Sorbonne and between 2014 and 2016 he was also Head of Department of Philosophy at the Paris Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi (PSUAD). Since its foundation (2007) he has been actively involved in the Master-Mundus course "German and French Philosophy in Europe (EuroPhilosophie)" - among other things, he was director of the intensive seminar at the University of Luxembourg and chairman of the selection committee at the University of Toulouse Jean Jaurès . Between 2012 and 2016 he was the head of the research center "CEPCAP" at the University of Paris-Sorbonne . Since 2016 he has been a university professor at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (chair for theoretical philosophy and phenomenology). There he heads the Institute for Transcendental Philosophy and Phenomenology (ITP), to which the International Fichte Research Center (IFF), the Eugen Fink Center Wuppertal (EFZW) and the Marc Richir Archive (MRA) are connected. He is President of the Association Internationale de Phenomenology (AIP).

Alexander Schnell lectured regularly at the University of Paris-Sorbonne Abu Dhabi and was visiting professor at the University of Memphis (USA), at the Hōsei University (Tokyo, Japan) and at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg.

Alexander Schnell is the nephew of the German artist Eva Thomkins (née Schnell) and the cousin of the Swiss industrial designer Nicolas Thomkins .

Focus of work

Alexander Schnell's research extends from Classical German Philosophy to German and French Phenomenology . He is particularly interested in Kant , Fichte , Schelling , Husserl , Heidegger , Fink , Levinas and Richir . He is considered to be a pioneer of a renewed phenomenology understood as transcendental idealism, which takes up Husserl's project of a phenomenology of knowledge. Since completing his habilitation, he has increasingly assumed an independent philosophical position, for which the terms "core phenomenology" and above all "constructive phenomenology" or "speculative transcendentalism" are characteristic.

He writes his work in French and German.
