In 1963 he received his bachelor's degree from the University of Western Australia and the following year he added a major in botany. He continued to work at the Western Australian Herbarium, but was appointed "Australian Botanical Liaison Officer" at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew near London in 1968 . George is also interested in history, particularly the biographies of Western Australian naturalists . He also published a number of historical articles, including a history of the Royal Society of Western Australia and a throwback to the naturalist Rica Erickson . In 1999 he published a book on William Dampier's collection of naturalists in Western Australia, entitled William Dampier in New Holland: Australia's First Natural Historian .

George initially specialized in orchids , but soon he focused on the genera Banksia and Dryandra from the Proteaceae family . He wrote the text for Celia Rosser's three-volume work "The Banksias", which appeared between 1981 and 2001 and in which Rosser's drawings of each individual Banksia type are included. In 1981 the magazine “Nuytsia” published George's seminal monograph “The genus Banksia L. f. (Proteceae) ”, the first taxonomic treatise on Banksien since George Bentham's “ Flora Australiensis ”from the 1870s. Three years later he published the popular "The Banksia Book" and again a year later "An Introduction to the Proteceae of Western Australia". In 1999 his taxonomy of the Banksien and Dryandren was published as part of the "Flora Australiensis" monograph series.

From 1981 to 1993 George lived in Canberra and worked as editor of the monograph series "Flora Australiensis". His comprehensive revision of the genus Verticordia with new taxa was published in "Nuytsia" in 1991. Today George lives in Perth again and works as a botanical and publishing consultant. He is also an Honory Research Associate with the Western Australian Herbarium and Associate Professor at the School of Biological Sciences at Murdoch University .
