Alexander Siedschlag (born February 25, 1971 in Berlin ) is a German political scientist and security researcher .

Life

Siedschlag studied political science, sociology, modern and contemporary history as well as personality psychology and psychodiagnostics at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. In 1994 he did his master's there. From 1994 to 1995, Siedschlag was a doctoral student at the International Politics Department of the Geschwister-Scholl-Institute for Political Science at the University of Munich. From 1995 to 1996 he was a NATO Research Fellow and Fellow at the Science and Politics Foundation . He contributed to the report of the Science and Politics Foundation and the Brookings Institution “Perspectives on Transatlantic Relations” for the European Commission. From April 1996 to March 1998 he was a postdoc in the DFG graduate school “The New Europe - National and International Dimensions of Institutional Change” at the Free University of Berlin and at the Humboldt University of Berlin . In February 2000 he qualified as a professor at the Humboldt University in Berlin in political science. In June 2001 he became a private lecturer in political science at the Institute for Social Sciences and in October he became the founding spokesman for the ad hoc group “Internet and Politics” in the German Association for Political Science (DVPW). In June 2002 he was also the organizer of the “Dare to Digital Democracy” conference of the ad hoc group “Internet and Politics” in the DVPW at the Humboldt University in Berlin. In July 2003 he was co-opted to the board of the Bavarian State Association of the German Society for the United Nations (DGVN) and in August 2003 he was appointed to the advisory board of the Virtual Library of Political Science (University and State Library Hamburg ). He was elected to the board of the regional association of Bavaria of the DGVN in February 2004. From March 2006 to March 2008 he was chairman of the board of the Bavarian regional association of the DGVN.

From October 2004 until his release in May 2007, Alexander Siedschlag was university professor at the University of Innsbruck for European security policy in the context of international politics and European integration. With his appointment in Innsbruck, he also became a foundation professor of the Republic of Austria for European security policy. This was followed by work as director of research at World Wide Education (WWEDU) and the management of the Center for European Security Studies, which was then located there. Siedschlag is also the organizer of the European Security Congress Initiative (ESCI). He worked as a juror in the Austrian national security research program KIRAS and as an evaluator for the area of ​​security research in the 7th research framework program of the European Union.

From June 2009 to August 2013, Siedschlag was Professor for Security Research and Head of the Institute for Security Research at the Sigmund Freud University in Vienna . he also heads the CEUSS | Center for European Security Studies. Among other things, he was coordinator of the security research project Foresight Security Scearios: Mapping Research to a Comprehensive Approach to Exogenous EU Roles (FOCUS) in the 7th EU Research Framework Program from 2011 to 2013.

Since August 2013, Siedschlag has been Professor & Chair of Homeland Security at Pennsylvania State University , Penn State Harrisburg, School of Public Affairs, where, among other things, he heads the intercollege Master of Professional Studies in Homeland Security (iMPS-HLS) program. Since July 2018, Siedschlag has also been Interim Director of the School of Public Affairs.

In 2005/2006, Siedschlag was the organizer of the "European Security Congress Innsbruck". His colleagues at the Institute for Political Science at the University of Innsbruck accused him of accepting sponsorship money. In doing so, he discredited the independence of his event and damaged the reputation of the university. This involved payments from the European aerospace technology group EADS , which manufactures the Eurofighter multi-purpose combat aircraft acquired by Austria . The institute management took the view that this created a conflict of interest. Siedschlag always replied that the neutrality of the event had not been compromised in any way by the payments (totaling 4000 EUR). The Eurofighter advance investigation by the Austrian National Council, to which Siedschlag had made himself available as an informant, also took note of the same.

In addition to earlier work in political systems theory, Siedschlag's work mainly includes work on the theory and methodology of international politics, German foreign policy, international security policy and conflict theory. Work on comparative political science with a focus on political internet use was added later. Siedschlag oriented particularly in the area of Safety Research ( Security Research ) including crisis and disaster management ( disaster research ).
