Alexander Wassiljewitsch Schirow ( Russian Александр Васильевич Жиров ; born September 12, 1958 in Dedenewo near Moscow, † May 21, 1983 in Jachroma ) was a Russian ski racer . Together with Valery Zyganow and Alexander Khoroshilov, Shirov was the only male Russian runner who could ever win a World Cup race .
biography
From the beginning of 1980 to the beginning of 1982, Schirow was one of the best slalom and giant slalom drivers in the world. In his short career, he was placed in the top ten 23 times. He had his strongest phase in March 1981, when he won four races within two weeks.
In the overall ranking for the World Cup, he finished third behind Phil Mahre and Ingemar Stenmark in the 1980/81 season , the best position ever achieved by a Russian ski racer.
Shirov only took part in the Olympic Games once. In Lake Placid in 1980 he was ninth in the giant slalom. At the 1982 World Ski Championships in Schladming , he was 13th in slalom.
In May 1983, at the age of 24, Shirov had an accident in his car near the city of Jachroma and succumbed to his injuries.
