The Alfa Romeo Giulia (type 952 ) is a mid- size car from the Italian car manufacturer Alfa Romeo , which is part of the Fiat Chrysler group . It has been in series production since 2016. So far the Giulia is only offered as a sedan and not as a station wagon .

history

development

The Italian designer Lorenzo Ramaciotti from Modena, who had already developed the Ferrari 456 GT , 550 Maranello and Enzo for Pininfarina as head of design , designed the body of the Giulia .

marketing

The German engineer and Alfa Romeo boss Harald J. Wester published a concept paper for the Alfa Romeo brand in May 2014 in which he showed a planned model offensive for 2015 and 2016. In September 2014, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne announced the launch of the Tipo 952 for the 105th anniversary of the Alfa Romeo brand on June 2nd, 2015. Together with Harald J. Wester, he presented the Giulia , the temporary top model Quadrifoglio , punctually in front of the backdrop of the Alfa Romeo museum in Arese, Italy, which has reopened after a long renovation .

At the IAA in Frankfurt am Main in September 2015, Alfa Romeo formally presented the new Giulia to the public for the first time.

The premiere for the less powerful model variants took place at the Geneva Motor Show 2016.

The top model GTA (Gran Turismo Alleggerita) should be presented at the Geneva Motor Show 2020 . Since the exhibition was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic , Alfa Romeo presented the model on March 2, 2020 via the Internet.

production

The sedan is built at the FCA Cassino plant. The planned start of production was announced in March 2015 for the fourth quarter of 2015, but has been postponed. In March 2016, sales started in April 2016. At the end of March 2016, Harald J. Wester announced the market launch of the vehicle for June 2016.

The Alfa Romeo Giulia has been available to order in Italy since May 2016. On May 10, 2016, Alfa Romeo also published the price list and the vehicle configurator on the official website in Germany.

In spring 2018, on the occasion of the 108th anniversary of the brand's foundation, the special model NRING (limited to 108 pieces) was presented. 20 vehicles were launched in Australia in 2018 as a special Carbonio Edition .

In 2019 the special model Alfa Romeo Racing (limited to 500 pieces) was presented.

Giulia GTA and GTAm

The top model GTA (Gran Turismo Alleggerita) of the model series was presented in spring 2020. Compared to the Quadrifoglio , the GTA and the even more extreme GTAm , which among other things does not have a rear seat bench, have an empty weight that is around 100 kg less. The output increases to 397 kW (540 PS). Optimizations to the aerodynamics were developed in cooperation with Sauber Motorsport . The top model of the series is limited to 500 copies.

Italian police

Since 2017, the vehicle has also been used by the Italian police authorities Polizia di Stato and Carabinieri .

technology

The vehicle is based on the Giorgio - platform of FCA.

drive

When motors are in the longitudinal direction of built-in Turbo - Otto engines with 2.0 liter displacement ( rows - four-cylinder engines from the FCA-GME-T4-Series) and with a maximum power of 147 kW and 206 kW and that with 2.9 liters capacity ( V6 Engines from the Ferrari F154 family) with 375 kW and 397 kW maximum power available. The R4 diesel engines are offered with a maximum output of 100 kW to 132 kW, and a diesel engine with a maximum output of 154 kW has also been available since October 2016. In 2016, a variant with measures to increase efficiency and thus reduced carbon dioxide emissions of 99 g / km (Advanced Efficiency) was made available.

Since the end of production of the Alfa Romeo 75 in 1992, the new Giulia has been Alfa Romeo's first sedan with rear-wheel drive .

landing gear

At the front, the vehicle has a double wishbone axle with a semi-virtual steering axle and a multi-link axle at the rear . The steering is supported electromechanically.

Braking system

The Giulia will be the first vehicle to be equipped with the electrohydraulic brake module "MK C1" from Continental AG, which combines brake actuation, brake booster and control functions for the vehicle dynamics control and the anti-lock braking system into one block. Alfa Romeo calls the system an integrated braking system (IBS) The system is seen as a brake-by-wire system; According to the manufacturer, the maximum braking pressure should be built up in 100 ms, while a purely hydraulic braking system should take 300 ms. Other media assume that it takes 150 ms to achieve full brake pressure. Due to the electrohydraulic actuation, the characteristic curve of the brake pedal can be designed differently in different modes.
