Alfred Ernst Cordes (born September 25, 1948 in Osnabrück ) is a German writer and former elementary school teacher .

Live and act

Alfred Cordes grew up in Osnabrück. After graduating from the Carolinum grammar school there , he first studied in Frankfurt am Main from 1967 , but then switched to teaching , which he completed in Münster and Hanover . From 1975 to 1982 he taught at a primary school in Hanover. During this time he was already writing little stories for his students. Then he took a leave of absence from school because he wanted to become a writer and moved to Mettingen- Schlickelde with his wife Sibylle, who also worked as a teacher, and their son . At the beginning of 1987 the family expanded again with the birth of their son Caspar Maximilian.

Cordes first attracted attention at the local cultural level in 1984 at the “Authors' Meeting”, a joint event organized by the adult education center and the cultural office of the city of Ibbenbüren and the Ibbenbüren people's newspaper with the story Death on the Water Wheel , an episode from his first novel, head jumps , which then consisted of various Reasons was only published in 1991 under the title Schattenleben . With his second novel, Caspar Coppenrath , Cordes took part in the 1985 authors' competition on the occasion of the “150 Years of C. Bertelsmann Verlag ” anniversary . The publishing house's interest was piqued and it was published as a book in 1987. The novel about a youth in Osnabrück in the post-war period made Cordes well-known, especially since the New Literary Society Hamburg awarded him the Mara Cassens Prize in 1988 for the best German-language first novel.

This was followed - also by C. Bertelsmann Verlag - the novels Klara's Night Dress (1990) and Schattenleben. From the premortal estate of Justus Vogt (1991). While Klara's night dress tells the story of the writer Justus Vogt and his love for the mentally handicapped Klara, in Schattenleben the author describes the fictional journey of a man in whom the boundaries between reality and fantasy are becoming increasingly blurred. In the end, he is identified as someone who ran away from the psychiatric clinic and is brought back there.

At the beginning of 1989, Alfred Cordes and his family moved from Schlickelde to the Kalkhügel district of Osnabrück , where he has lived since then. After a nine-year leave of absence, he returned to school in 1991 and taught at the Old Town School in Osnabrück until his retirement in 2012. When he became a class teacher for the first Osnabrück integration class at this elementary school in 1991 , he had no corresponding training, nor any special professional experience in this area. Cordes later also worked as a "cooperating teacher" in the field of initial lessons at the University of Osnabrück and published educational articles in specialist magazines such as Die Grundschule .

During these years he put his writing work back a little. It wasn't until 2002 that a new novel came out with Heavenly and Earthly Love . Since 2013, Alfred Cordes has published all of his works as e-books , including his more recent novels Christmas Eve , Between the Years and The Falling Fruit , a trilogy about the story of Gouda and Leica, their friendship and experiences. In 2013 another novel followed with The Clock of the Scythians , the plot of which is set in Osnabrück. Cordes has also been running his blog live & write since August 2014 . He is involved in various ways in the cultural life of the city of Osnabrück.
