Alfred Kamphausen (born March 31, 1906 in Rheydt ; † November 11, 1982 in Kiel ) was a German art historian , museum director and university professor who taught at Kiel University .

Life

The from the Rhineland native Kamphausen studied at several universities, including in Cologne , Berlin and Munich mainly art history and received his doctorate in 1929 at the University of Bonn with the award summa cum laude . His dissertation was published in 1931 under the title “The Lower Rhine Sculpture in the 16th Century with Special Consideration of the Conditions in Xanten” and under the title “The Lower Rhine Sculpture in the 16th Century and the Images of the Xanten Cathedral” in Düsseldorf .

In 1931 Kamphausen became director of the Dithmarscher State Museum in Meldorf . After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , Kamphausen joined the NSDAP in May 1933 . Links arose from his commitment to local history and folk art: Kamphausen was head of the working group of local museums in Schleswig-Holstein and from 1935 Schleswig-Holstein museum curator. In addition, he was responsible for traditional costumes in the Reichsbund für Volkstum und Heimat and held the position of lecturer for folk culture in the Kampfbund for German culture .

After the Second World War , Kamphausen, who had completed his habilitation under Richard Sedlmaier in 1938 , became a private lecturer in 1946 and then in 1953 an adjunct professor at the University of Kiel. In 1961 he gave up the position of director of the Dithmarscher Landesmuseum and, as director, organized the reconstruction of the Schleswig-Holstein open-air museum . He worked as professor and museum director until 1977 and 1978 respectively. In 1976 he was awarded the City of Kiel's Culture Prize.

Kamphausen has worked as a writer throughout his career and was also co-editor of the Nordelbingen magazine . Kamphausen died on November 11, 1982 in Kiel.

Act

Alfred Kamphausen played an important role in historical research on northern German art. Even if his interest and his research covered a wide spectrum and also touched France and the East, his focus and main point of reference were always the northern European area and especially northern Germany .

Many of his writings and works deal with local history , folk art and regional studies of Friesland and Schleswig-Holstein .

The entrepreneurial and committed Kamphausen was not only interested in researching art, but also in conveying what his museum work could do well. In his teaching, the students' encounter with art itself, “with the works on site” was a particular concern for him, for which he organized numerous trips, including B. in collaboration with the art historian Wolfgang Müller .
