Alfred Kirchhoff (born May 23, 1838 in Erfurt ; † February 8, 1907 in Mockau ) was a German geographer .

Life

After graduating from the Royal High School in Erfurt , Kirchhoff studied natural sciences at the University of Bonn and later moved to the University of Jena . In 1861 he finished his studies with a doctorate .

Kirchhoff then worked at several secondary schools. In 1865 he was transferred to the trade school in Berlin . In 1871 he followed a call to the Berlin War Academy and took on a teaching position for geography . Two years later he advanced to full professor and worked as such at the University of Halle .

In 1878 the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina accepted him as a member. From this time on, Kirchhoff increasingly worked on reforming geography lessons in schools. He also campaigned for regional studies and between 1887 and 1904 he acted as editor of research on German regional and folklore .

Alfred Kirchhoff was buried in Hamburg's Ohlsdorf cemetery in the area of ​​the Otto Jonasson family grave (grid square V 12, northeast of chapel 1).
