Otto Carl Alfred Moschkau (born January 24, 1848 in Löbau ; † May 27, 1912 in Oybin ) was a German philatelist and local historian.

Act

Moschkau was a publicist, poet and regional researcher and confidante of the Saxon Monument Commission . He was among the founders of scientific philately in Germany: in 1876 already appeared in the Wiener Illustrierte-Zeitung Stamps by Sigmund Friedl , an editorial about him as "The Head of German philatelists." As a philatelist, he was actually very important in his time. At times he had an extensive stamp collection, with the help of which he became one of the very first stamp inspectors from 1871 . He was one of the first authors in the field of philately and was editor for various stamp magazines. For example, he managed the Deutsche Briefmarken-Zeitung , the Illustrierte Briefmarken-Journal and his own stamp magazine .

In 1879 he founded the Oybin Museum in the castle of the same name , which he also directed. He also founded the Oybin Mountain Association . He also promoted tourism and the construction of the Zittau narrow-gauge railway . He collected autographs by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe , Friedrich Schiller and Thomas Körner.

Alfred Moschkau was buried in the cemetery of the Oybin monastery.
