After finishing school, Alfred Neugebauer first learned the profession of stone printer . In his free time he was a mountaineer in the climbing area of Saxon Switzerland and studied the history of Saxony. For a time he was chairman of the youth in the Saxon Mountaineering Association (SBB). Since 1929 he has carried out individual excavations on the Neurathen Castle . After he became a member of the Landesverein Sächsischer Heimatschutz in 1930 , the first systematic excavations followed in the rock castle from 1932 to 1934. Among other things, Neugebauer discovered the course of the castle's former battlements.

In the early 1930s he moved to the Dresden fire brigade and became a firefighter. In the spring of 1939, after the arson organized by the National Socialists as part of the November pogroms, during which the Semper synagogue burned out, Neugebauer hid the Star of David that had been captured by the fire brigade management. After the war he handed it over to the chairman of the Dresden Jewish community, Leon Löwenkopf, in 1949 . The Star of David was installed on Fiedlerstrasse 3 synagogue in 1950 . Almost half a century later it was attached to the portal of the New Synagogue , which was built from 1998 in the immediate vicinity of the destroyed church.

After the war, Neugebauer worked in different positions, including as a technical and scientific assistant, screen printer and fire protection officer . Even after the war, he did voluntary work in local history research and archeology and, among other things, carried out excavations of the Bronze Age settlement on the Pfaffenstein . He also researched the history of rock castles in Saxon Switzerland. He worked as an employee for the Dresden State Museum of Prehistory , as well as a voluntary ground monument curator . In 1979 Neugebauer retired, but remained active on a voluntary basis. He carried out excavations next to the Pfaffenstein from 1982 to 1984 again in the rock castle Neurathen. After 1990 he was involved in the re-establishment of the Saxon Homeland Security Association. In addition, Neugebauer was active in the Dresden History Association , in the AG Sächsische Burgen of the German Castle Association and as a lecturer at the Volkshochschule Dresden . At SBB he was a member of the IG Bergsteigergeschichte. Neugebauer remained active into old age. His grave is in the old Annenfriedhof in Dresden.
