Alfred Overmann

Alfred Overmann (born November 6, 1866 in Bergheim , † February 7, 1946 in Erfurt ; full name: Alfred Julius Gottfried Overmann) was a German historian and director of the Erfurt City Archives .

Life

Alfred Overmann passed his Abitur at the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Gymnasium (Cologne) . He studied history , German and art history at the University of Berlin . The doctorate took place in 1892 . In 1893 he worked as a volunteer at the Cologne City Archives . From 1894 he worked as an assistant at the Strasbourg District Archives. In 1899 he was a volunteer at the Secret State Archives in Berlin and in the same year became an employee of the State Archives in Münster .

From 1901 he was director of the Erfurt city archives and at the same time managed the city library in a secondary position until 1908 . He was also in charge of the Erfurt Municipal Museum from 1901 to 1912 . From 1901 he was a member of the Association for Art and Applied Arts and served on the board until 1933. From 1904 to 1928 he gave courses at the Kunstgewerbeschule Erfurt and from 1911 he took on teaching positions in the subject of art history. In 1906 he was one of the founding members of the "Museum Community of Erfurt" association.

On January 1, 1913, Overmann took up a part-time job as director of the Nordhausen Municipal Museum and began to systematically reorganize the facility on the respective weekends. In the same year he was appointed professor. In 1923 Overmann went back to Erfurt, where he turned back to historical research.

From 1913 to 1933 he was chairman of the literary association. He was a member of the Academy of Non-Profit Sciences , the Association for the History and Archeology of Erfurt and the "Genealogical Evening".

In 1943, after 47 years of marriage, he left his Jewish wife and four children. His wife was deported in 1944 and died.
