Alfred P. Swineford

Alfred Peter Swineford (born September 14, 1836 in Ashland , Ohio , † October 26, 1909 in Juneau , Alaska ) was an American politician of the Democratic Party .

Swineford was a member of the Michigan House of Representatives from 1871 to 1872 . In 1878 he applied for the office of lieutenant governor in Michigan , but lost in the primary of his party to Lysander Woodward, who in turn could not defeat the Republican incumbent Alonzo Sessions in the actual election .

Between 1885 and 1889, Swineford served as Governor of the District of Alaska after being appointed by US President Grover Cleveland . When a delegate was first elected in 1906 to represent the territory in Congress , he ran, but was defeated by another Democrat in Frank Hinman Waskey .
