Alfred Poell (singer)

Alfred Poell (born March 18, 1900 in Linz , Upper Austria ; † January 30, 1968 in Vienna ) was an Austrian ENT doctor who became known as an opera and lied singer in the baritone field.

Life

Poell was the son of the gynecologist and painter Alfred Poell of the same name . Like his father, he studied medicine at the University of Innsbruck and became active in his father's corps Gothia Innsbruck in 1920 . He moved to the University of Vienna and was reciprocated in the befriended Corps Alemannia Vienna in 1921 . He was promoted to Dr. med. doctorate, but turned to singing . He studied in Vienna with Filip Forstén (1852–1922) at the Vienna Music Academy and with Josef von Manowarda . He made his debut as a professional opera singer in 1929 at the Düsseldorf Opera, where he worked for ten years. In 1940 he went to the Vienna State Opera , where he stayed until the end of his career. He became internationally known for his appearances at the Teatro alla Scala di Milano , at the Royal Opera House , at the Paris Opera , at the Salzburg Festival and at the Glyndebourne Festival Opera , especially in roles by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart . Milestones were the appearances in Don Giovanni (1950), The Rape of Lucretia (1950), Idomeneo and Le nozze di Figaro (1952), Der Freischütz (1954), Ariadne auf Naxos (1954) and Der Rosenkavalier (1960). He was also active as a lieder singer . He is buried in the Hernalser Friedhof (group 13, number 27).
