Alfred Rod

Alfred Stange (born August 14, 1894 in Glauchau ; † September 9, 1968 in Tutzing ) was a German art historian whose work on old German painting is of relevance for style analysis research.

Career

In 1921 he was given a thesis on German painting and sculpture from the late 14th to the middle of the 15th century. PhD. Already in 1925 he received his habilitation in Munich with Wilhelm Pinder . Here he had dealt with the German architecture of the Renaissance . From 1925 to 1931 he worked initially as a private lecturer and then from 1931 to 1934 as an associate professor in Munich.

After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , Stange became a member of the NSDAP and the SA in May 1933 . In 1934 he received a call to the University of Erlangen , where he taught as a full professor until 1935. In 1934 and 1935 he was also a lecturer at the Reichsfuhrer School of the SA. From 1935 to 1945 he was full professor for art history in Bonn . Stange, who was a confidante of Alfred Rosenberg , was active as an administrator in the Nazi teachers' association and became chief editor for art history and architecture at the Reich Office for the Promotion of German Literature .

After the end of the Second World War he was dismissed as a professor and retired in 1949. In 1962, his impeachment was converted into a retirement .

His main scientific work is his work on German panel painting of the late Middle Ages. His collection of illustrations of old German panel painting comprised around 30,000 black and white photographs, which have become part of the holdings of the Central Institute for Art History .
