Alfredo Schäffler

Alfredo Schäffler (born January 18, 1941 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs , Lower Austria , Austria ) is an Austrian clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Parnaíba in Brazil .

Life

After attending school in Waidhofen, Alfredo Schäffler went to Vienna-Strebersdorf and joined the religious order of Christian School Brothers . From 1963 to 1966 he worked as a religion teacher and educator in Feldkirch . He then left the order to become a priest . On June 16, 1968 he received the sacrament of ordination for the Brazilian diocese of Picos .

In addition to various pastoral tasks in Brazil, he studied canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome from 1978 . From 1985 he was pastor in Teresina and episcopal vicar for economic affairs.

On 15 March 2000 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To Coadjutor Bishop of Parnaíba. The Archbishop of Teresina , Miguel Fenelon Câmara Filho , gave him episcopal ordination on June 3 of the same year ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Picos , Augusto Alves da Rocha , and the Bishop of Parnaíba, Joaquim Rufino do Rêgo . On February 21, 2001 Alfredo Schäffler succeeded Joaquim Rufino do Rêgo, who resigned for reasons of age, Bishop of Parnaíba.

Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation on August 24, 2016.
