Algimantas Butnorius (born November 20, 1946 in Kaunas , † October 30, 2017 ) was a Lithuanian chess player .

Life

Butnorius graduated from Vilnius University in 1973 and was a journalist by profession . 1975–1989 he worked at Lietuvos TV .

He was chairman of the ŠK Margiris Kaunas chess club . From 1975 to 1989 he was chairman of the Lithuanian Chess Federation. He died in 2017. His wife and eldest daughter also died that same year.

His grave is in the Petrašiūnai cemetery .

successes

Butnorius won the championship of Lithuania in 1967, 1970, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1980, 1982 and 1993. In 1983 he became International Master . He achieved his greatest successes on the international level at an advanced age. In 2007 he won the silver medal at the Senior European Championships in Hockenheim , which he followed in the same year with the World Championship at the Senior World Championships in Gmunden . As 17th senior world champion (ahead of Yevgeny Wassjukow and Vlastimil Jansa ) he also received the grandmaster title .

For the Lithuanian national team, Butnorius took part in three Chess Olympiads ( 2000 , 2004 and 2006 ) and two European team championships (1999 and 2003). Most recently he played for Monaco at the European Small Nations Tournament 2015 and the Chess Olympiad 2016 . Butnorius played club chess for ŠK Margiris Kaunas , with whom he also took part in the European Club Cup four times .
