Ali Abdullah Ayyoub ( Arabic علي عبد الله أيوب, DMG ʿAlī ʿAbd Allāh Ayyūb ; born April 28, 1952 in Latakia ) is a general in the Syrian Army and Minister of Defense of Syria since January 1, 2018 .

Military career

Ayyoub was made a lieutenant in the Syrian Army in 1973. Ali Abdullah Ayyoub was appointed deputy chief of staff in September 2011 and assumed the role of chief chief of staff in July 2012. In 2018, he replaced Fahd Jassim al-Freij in his role as defense minister.

Role in the Syrian civil war

Ayyoub was sanctioned by the United States Department of State on March 17, 2020 for his role in the battle for Idlib Governorate .

Private life

Ali Abdullah Ayyoub is married and has three children. He belongs to the religious minority of the Alawites .
