List of grape varieties

Alicante Bouschet or Alicante Henri Bouschet is a red wine variety . It is a new breed by Henri Bouschet from 1855 from Grenache and Petit Bouschet . Petit Bouschet, on the other hand, was crossed from the Teinturier du Cher and Aramon grape varieties and is a development by Louis Bouschet, Henri's father. The quality of the grapes is poor, but produces a beautiful red color when used as a blend .

Alicante Bouschet is mainly grown in the south of France and in North Africa (see viticulture in Algeria ) and to a lesser extent in Italy , Portugal and California (→ viticulture in California ). In Spain it is one of the approved grape varieties under the name Garnacha Tintorera in the DO regions of Alicante , Almansa , Bierzo and Terra Alta . It is not to be confused with the Bouchet grape variety, which is synonymous with Cabernet Franc .

At the time of prohibition in the USA, it was very popular there. This grape variety is very suitable for transport because of its thick skin. So you could produce your own wine without having to cultivate your own vineyards.

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

The Alicante Bouschet grape variety is prone to phytoplasm contamination . The phytoplasm infestation leads to yellowing diseases such as golden yellow yellowing ( French : Flavescence dorée ) or blackwood disease .

Alicante Bouschet is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided.
