Definition of terms

Textile finishing

In textile finishing , alkalization is a process for processing PET fibers . For this, the PET fiber is treated with alkaline, which leads to

  • a reduction in the filament denier and the fiber diameter occurs
  • a smooth, silk-like handle is created
  • The formation of craters and notches on the surface results in a matting of the fiber
  • an undesirable loss of strength and weight occurs (10–30%)

natural Science

In a scientific context, for example in soil development ( pedogenesis ), the process of increasing the pH value in the soil through alkaline dusts ( magnesite dust or cement dust ) is called alkalization .

medicine

For the prophylaxis of a tumor lysis syndrome , among other things, urine can be alkalized by appropriate infusions or medication, whereby a better excretion of the urine can be achieved.

nutritional science

In cocoa powder production, alkalization can be used to separate a) fat from the cocoa mass and b) influence the taste and color of the cocoa powder
