Allan James Foley , also Signor Foli or Allan James Foli (born August 7, 1835 in Cahir , † October 10, 1899 in Southport ) was an Irish opera singer (bass).

Life

Foley lived from 1853 with his uncle in Hartfort / Connecticut, where he received singing lessons and was a member of a church choir. On the recommendation of his singing teacher, he continued his training from 1861 with Giovanni Bisaccia at the Conservatorio San Pietro a Maiella in Naples.

In the following year he made his debut in Catania as Elmiro in Gioachino Rossini's opera Othello . Engagements in Modena, Turin and Milan followed. During this time he became known as Signor Foli , a name that remained with him until the end of his life. In 1864 he appeared at the Théâtre des Italiens , in 1865 he made his debut in London at Her Majesty's Theater as Count de St. Bris in Giacomo Meyerbeer's Die Huguenots , and later he also appeared in a total of 60 opera performances at the Theater Royal Drury Lane and the Covent Garden Opera . He also sang in the Norma in Dublin.

In 1870 he took on the role of Daland in the English premiere of Richard Wagner's Fliegendem Holländer . In Russia he appeared in Rossini's Moses in Egypt , Weber's Freischütz and Auber's Masaniello in 1873 , and in 1880 he took part in the English premiere of Hector Berlioz 's oratorio L'enfance du Christ in Manchester.

From 1878 Foley was the first bassist in James Henry Mapleson's opera company, with whom he appeared in America from 1878-79, in 1892 in Australia and New Zealand and in 1893 in South Africa. As one of the first classical musicians he sang phonographic recordings in London's Crystal Palace in 1878 .
