Allan George Moffat , OBE , (born November 10, 1939 in Saskatoon ) is a former Canadian racing car driver and racing team owner who is also an Australian citizen. He contested his races with an Australian driver license.

Racing career

Allan Moffat was born in Canada in 1939 and moved to Australia with his parents in 1956. His father worked for Massey Ferguson , a Melbourne-based agricultural vehicle and machinery manufacturer , and took on a managerial role. Moffat, who started motorsport in 1964, became one of the most successful racing drivers in Australian motorsport. Between 1973 and 1984 he won the overall ranking of the Australian Touring Car Championship eight times . His duels with Peter Brock became legendary . His first championship he won in 1973 on a Ford XY Falcon GT of the Australian Ford - factory team . The last overall victory dates from 1984 in the Mazda RX-7 of the own racing team. He won the two most important Australian endurance races several times, six times the Sandown 500 and four times the Bathurst 1000 .

He competed twice in the Sebring 12-hour race , which he won in 1975 together with Brian Redman , Hans-Joachim Stuck and Sam Posey in the works BMW 3.0 CSL . He was also involved twice in the 24 Hours of Le Mans , with the best result in 1982 when he finished 14th in the overall standings.

It was not until 2004 that he received Australian citizenship , which he was awarded at a ceremony as part of the Australian Grand Prix . Allan Moffat, whose sons James and Andy also became racing drivers, retired from the public in 2019 because of Alzheimer's disease .
