The All Saints Church at Krasnoye Selo ( Russian Храм Всех Святых в Красном селе ) is a Russian Orthodox church in the Russian capital Moscow . The church was built from 1887 to 1891 in the city's former Alexius monastery. Today it is located in Moscow's Krasnoselsky district, near Komsomolskaya Square .

history

start of building

In 1837 the Alexius Monastery was moved from the center of the capital Moscow to the village of Krasnoselski north of Moscow city center. From 1887 to 1891 an All Saints Church and a small chapel in honor of Our Lady of Kazan were built in the cemetery of the new monastery . The church, designed by the architect A. A. Nikiforov, was considered unusual, as there are three domes on the bell tower . The paintings inside the church were made by the icon painters of the Trinity Monastery of Sergiev Posad . The iconostasis of the church, made of white stone, was designed by the well-known architect NITschitschagowa. The cemetery of the Alexius Monastery was opened in 1841. In the years that followed, several famous people were buried in this cemetery.

Soviet time

The Alexius Monastery was finally closed in 1926; the nuns were forced to leave the monastery. At the beginning of the 20th century there were four churches in the monastery complex. These were the Church of the Man of God Alexius , the Kreuzkirche, the All Saints Church and the Archangel Michael Church. Of these four churches, the Kreuzkirche and the Archangel Michael Church were destroyed in Soviet times.

The All Saints Church was used as an archive during the Soviet era. The oldest of the four church buildings, the Kreuzkirche, served as an office building. The Church of the Man of God Alexius was converted into a quarter for pioneers . The Archangel Michael Church was finally demolished in 1970 to make room for a residential building. In the late 1980s, the old cemetery of the former monastery had to give way to a new expressway .

Since the 1990s

After the end of the Soviet Union, the church, like many other church buildings in Russia, was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1991 . Since then, extensive reconstruction work has begun on the church and the other structures on the site of the former Alexius monastery. In 2009 the chapel of Our Lady of Kazan and a stone wall with an entrance portal were completed.

Today the church has a poor house with a small chapel, a Sunday school and an icon workshop since 1991 , a charity fund since 2002 and a church shop . A church choir has also been organized since 2005 .
