Almeno tu nell'universo ("At least you in the universe") is an Italian song by Bruno Lauzi and Maurizio Fabrizio , which was first published in 1989 by Mia Martini .
Background and publication
The songwriters Fabrizio and Lauzi had already written the song in 1972 (1974 according to other sources), when Lauzi had also written the lyrics for Mia Martini's first hit, Piccolo uomo . Martini initially refused to include Almeno tu nell'universo . When the song was finally submitted for the Sanremo Festival in 1989 , Mietta was initially intended as the interpreter. However, this withdrew (she instead presented Canzoni by Amedeo Minghi at the festival ) and so the song went back to Mia Martini, who was currently working on a comeback with producer Gianni Sanjust after a several year retreat from the public. Composer Fabrizio supervised the recording of the song as arranger and conductor.
Mia Martini last took part in the festival in 1982 and won the critics' award there. In 1989 she presented Almeno tu nell'universo on the second evening of the festival (February 22nd) and reached ninth place (out of 24) in the main category in the final. For the second time she was awarded the Critics' Prize. The song was released as a 7 ″ single SP 1871 by Fonit Cetra with the B-side Spegni la testa . Both songs found their way into the studio album Martini Mia in the same year … In addition, Almeno tu nell'universo was part of a jukebox release together with Mietta's Canzoni .
music
The song consists of three ten-bar stanzas (A) and a two-part, 16-bar chorus (B-B '), in the sequence AAB-B'-AB-B' - [B ']. It begins with a two-measure piano intro. The percussion starts from the second verse, the strings only join shortly before the chorus. The last repetition of the second refrain part ([B ']) is purely instrumental in the first half, with the strings taking over the main part; this is repeated in the hidden outro. The key is F sharp major .

text
Almeno tu nell'universo is not a classic love song: the topic is rather the contradictions of human behavior and the search for an emotional fixed point in the midst of this instability.
The three stanzas each begin with the words Sai, la gente è ... ("You know, the people are ...") and a changing adjective, strana ("strange"), matta ("crazy") or sola ("lonely" ). The first two stanzas show how people suddenly and without difficulty go from love to hate and from truth to lies and blindly follow the environment and fashion . In the third stanza there are attempts to explain people's behavior (loneliness and existential fears), whereby it also becomes clear that the singer sees herself as part of this strange, crazy, lonely group.
This relatively negative image of the stanzas is contrasted with the person addressed in the refrain as a strong contrast: Tu, tu che be diverso ("You who are different"). At least it is an unchangeable fixed point ( fixed star ), a sun , a diamond in the entire universe . The second part of the chorus contains an almost pleading plea that he may always be honest and love her more and more.
reception
Along with Minuetto (1973), Almeno tu nell'universo is Mia Martini's best known and most characteristic song. In an online survey carried out by Repubblica.it in 2005, it was also voted the most beautiful song of the Sanremo Festival of all time.
success
After a long absence, Mia Martini managed to return to the M&D single charts with the song ; The song reached number 20 in the 1989 annual charts. In early 2008, the song entered the FIMI single charts again after it was used in an advertising campaign by the automobile manufacturer Fiat .

Cover versions
A variety of Italian and international musicians released cover versions of the song. The Spanish-Argentine singer Magdalena León recorded it in 1992 with a Spanish text by Roberto López as Al menos tú en el universo for her self-titled album, while the American singer Thelma Houston released an English version of Flame (text by Tobias Boshell ) in 1994 Song (exclusively for the Italian market). On the occasion of Mia Martini's death, Mina Almeno recorded tu nell'universo in 1995 for her album Pappa di latte . Fiordaliso released another Spanish version under the title Por lo menos tu en el universo in their album Como te amaré (1997); she covered the Italian version in 2004.
Elisa recorded Almeno tu nell'universo in 2003 for the soundtrack of the film Ricordati di me by Gabriele Muccino . In this version the song reached the top of the Italian single charts for the first time (and number six in the annual ranking). There is also a music video that also contains film scenes. Elisa released the song in a rearranged version on her album Lotus at the end of the year .
Further versions (always purely albums) were published by Massimo Ranieri (2006), Mafalda Minnozzi (2008), Paolo Fresu (2008), Fausto Leali (2009) and Gilda Giuliani (2009). Marco Mengoni sang the song while participating in the 2009 talent show X Factor and after winning it included in his debut EP Dove si vola . During the Sanremo Festival, the song was covered several times by participants: in 2004 by Mario Rosini , in 2012 by Gigi D'Alessio and Loredana Bertè with Macy Gray (combined with the English version by Thelma Houston) and in 2013 by Chiara .
