Old German name book

The old German name book ( ANB ) is to record all place names in Germany and Austria . Names of settlements, mountains, bodies of water and corridors are recorded that have been recorded in writing since the German settlement in 1200.

The first old German name book is a work by Ernst Förstemann . It is continued in Austria by the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

History of origin

The idea for an old German name book came from Jacob Grimm . Ernst Förstemann began with the realization around 1849.

However, Förstemann did not know at the time that others were also working on a similar project and therefore fighting it. In the foreword he wrote: "I am reluctant to reveal what means they fought with, although I could report very striking here."

Förstemann was not deterred by this and published the first volume in 1856, which found strong sales. Förstemann saw himself confirmed and was able to publish the second volume in 1859. In 1872 a second, completely new version of this volume appeared. During this time Förstemann had to accept the deaths of two people close to him: Jacob Grimm died in 1863, his nephew and publisher Ferdinand Förstemann in 1876.

In Austria, the project is now being carried out at the Institute for Austrian Dialect and  Name Lexicons of the Center for Linguistics, Image and Sound Documentation (SBT) in Vienna, and is called DINAMLEX as a digitalization project, within which it is included in a more comprehensive database of Bavarian dialects in Austria should be included.
