The old Angerturnhalle is located in the center of the Upper Franconian town of Coburg in Schützenstraße across from the Anger. The building was built in 1866 in the neo-Gothic style with bricks and is registered as a monument in the Bavarian list of monuments.

history

After the German Gymnastics and Youth Festival, which took place in Coburg in 1860, there were increased efforts to build a gym . After lengthy negotiations, the city and the State Ministry finally came to an agreement in early 1866. The Ketschenanger was agreed as the location of the hall. Of the construction costs of 11,000 guilders , the state paid 5,000 guilders and was given the right to use the municipal hall. The western hall of the double building was completed in December 1866 in an inexpensive brick construction according to a plan by the city councilor Julius Martinet . In the beginning, 700 boys had weekly physical education classes in the heated building. In 1903 an equipment room was added on the north side. In 1906, a lack of space prompted the State Ministry to build a somewhat larger state gymnasium to the east, presumably under the direction of Government Building Councilor Arthur Philibert. In 1957 a tool room was added on the east side and in 1986 the building was redesigned for the youth center “domino”. The older, eastern hall has been used for storage and exhibition purposes since a renovation with a partial demolition of the northern extension in 1989. On March 18, 1977, a triple gymnasium was inaugurated as a replacement building opposite on the Anger, which was demolished in 2019.

architecture

The single-storey, eaves-standing double halls have gable roofs with a uniform construction and ridge line. The older part, with a wooden ceiling supported by wall studs, is one of the rarely preserved gyms from the second third of the 19th century. The neo-Gothic facade has seven axes with segmented arched windows in each hall and consists of bricks with sandstone sections. In the middle there is the entrance in a risalit between colossal corner pillars with a gable . The left arched portal has a neo-classical tympanum with the city coat of arms, the right a gable oculus and an internal staircase between the corner pillars. The western pediment has a square field in the middle, crowned by an acroter and framed by side turrets. The eastern gable is only adorned by a gable top.
