The Old Brethren Church is the oldest high Gothic architectural monument and the second oldest still standing church building in the city of Kassel . The Brothers Church is part of the Renthof .

history

The construction of the church as a place of worship for the Carmelite Order began in 1298 as a Gothic church near the Landgrave's Castle on the Fulda . The order itself was settled in Kassel by Landgrave Heinrich I in 1262. The choir was consecrated in 1331 , but it was not until 1376 that the church was completed. With the introduction of the Reformation in the Landgraviate of Hesse , the monastery was dissolved in 1526. Since the neighboring parish church on Marställer Platz was demolished, the services were now held in the Brothers Church.

During the Second World War , the Brüderkirche was destroyed in the night of October 22nd to 23rd, 1943 during a heavy bombing raid on the city . The ruins were rebuilt after the war and the church was consecrated again on October 23, 1955.

Admonishing angel

On the north side of the building, in November 1958, the General Association of Protestant Churches installed a memorial to the victims of the bombing, the "Admonishing Angel". The sculpture was created by Kurt Lehmann .

In 1971, a new community center with the New Brethren Church was built for the old town parish at Weserstraße 26. The Old Brethren Church was then de-dedicated and a Brothers Church Foundation was established.

today

Today, cultural and social events take place in the Brethren Church. On certain days like Easter Vigil or Christmas Eve , services are held again in the Old Brethren Church. During documenta IX the church was an exhibition space.
