The Old Nazareth Church is a church designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel in the Wedding part of Berlin's Mitte district . It is one of the four Schinkel suburban churches that all have a similar blueprint. It takes its name from Nazareth , the hometown of Jesus .

history

The church on Leopoldplatz was built from 1832 to 1835 and consecrated on July 5, 1835 . Schinkel chose a brick building in his typical round arch style , which takes up motifs from Northern Italian Romanesque . The structure of the original interior division can already be seen on the outside of this austere cubic building. The facade suggests a two-story structure, with the large, upper arched windows showing the location of the former galleries . The corner rooms have very small windows.

By Friedrich August Stüler the church would later - as with almost identical St. John's Church in Moabit - a presbytery, a bell tower and a connecting arcade supplemented. However, these plans were not carried out here, so that the exterior of the church has remained almost unchanged. After it had become too small for the congregation and the New Nazareth Church was built, services were no longer held here. From then on it served primarily for diaconal and catechetical work. In 1906 a false ceiling was drawn into the high interior space at the height of the galleries. In this context, the ground floor received additional arched windows for better exposure, so that the lower windows now have a continuous row. In addition, an apse was built to accommodate side rooms.

Between 1972 and 1974 a daycare center was built on the ground floor. From 1977 to 1980 the hall on the upper floor - called the Schinkelsaal - was restored, which is also used again for church services.

reception

The entrance area with the three arched doors presumably served as a model for the construction of the Neptun swimming pool in Rostock.
