Altoona is a town that is partly in Blount County and partly in Etowah County of the US state of Alabama . It belongs to the ' Gadsden Metropolitan Statistical Area '. In 2000 the place had 984 inhabitants.

According to the US Census Bureau , the city has an area of 9.9 km², of which 9.8 km² is land and 0.1 km² (= 0.26%) is water.

Altoona is traversed by Alabama State Route 132 . It is about 2 kilometers south of US Highway 278 , which here runs on the same route as Alabama State Route 74 . About 15 kilometers east of the community there is also a connection to Interstate 59 and Interstate 759 , with US Highway 11 running parallel to the former .
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000 Altoona lived in 984 people. The population density was 100.0 people per km². There were 437 housing units at an average of 44.4 per km ². The population was 95.43% white , 2.54% black or African American , 0.1% Native American , 0.91% said they belonged to other races , and 1.02% said they were two or more races. 2.54% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latino of any race.
The residents of the city distributed to 397 households out of which 33.8% were living in children under 18 years of age. 47.9% of households are married, 15.6% had a female head of the household without a husband and 31.5% did not form families. 29.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 13.1% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.89 people.
The urban population was divided into 25.5% minors, 8.2% 18–24 year olds, 26.3% 25–44 year olds, 22.6% 45–64 year olds and 17.4% aged 65 and over or more. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 women there were 78.6 men. For every 100 women over 18, there were 79.2 men.
The median household income was 20,469 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 28,750 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 30,250 compared to $ 22,344 for women. The per capita income in Altoona was $ 11,168. 27.2% of the population and 21.8% of all families had an income below the poverty line , including 39.3% of minors and 16.3% of those aged 65 and over.
