Alves Barbosa

António da Silva Alves Barbosa (born December 24, 1931 in Fontela , Figueira da Foz district ; † September 29, 2018 there ) was a Portuguese cyclist .

In 1950 he was Portuguese amateur champion and finished 19th at the Volta a Portugal . He won them in 1951, 1958 and 1959.

He finished the Tour de France in 1956 in tenth place. From 1961 he was coach of the traditional cycling department of Benfica Lisbon and became national coach in 1975, 1978, 1989 and 1992. He is still very popular today, due to his merits and successes as well as his cheerful and popular appearance.

In 1958 he was the main actor in the film O Homem do Dia (Eng .: The man of the day). The director Henrique Campos shot the first Portuguese film in Cinemascope . The film was an expression of the enormous popularity Alves Barbosa was enjoying in Portugal at the time.
