Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder [ ˈbɔsχaːɾt ] (born November 18, 1573 (baptism date) in Antwerp , †  1621 in The Hague ) was a Dutch painter of the " Golden Age ". He was best known for his colorful still lifes of bouquets of flowers, such as the flower vase in a window niche from around 1620 .

life and work

Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder moved with his parents to Middelburg in 1587/88 , where he was a member of the painters' guild from 1593 to 1613; In 1614 he lived in Amsterdam, in 1615 in Bergen-op-Zoom, from 1615 to 1619 in Utrecht and then in Breda .

Bosschaert established the flower still life as an independent genre within Dutch art. Bosschaert's works resemble those of his contemporary Jan Brueghel the Elder in terms of the accuracy of the representation and the balance in the colors , from whom he was particularly strongly influenced in his early days.

His style was further developed by his three sons Ambrosius the Younger (1609–1645), Abraham (1612–1643) and Johannes (1607–1628) and his son-in-law Balthasar van der Ast .
