American Academy of Pediatrics

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) is an organization of professional pediatrics in the United States based in Elk Grove Village , Illinois . The motto is: Dedicated to the Health of All Children . Most US pediatricians are members.

It was founded in 1930 by 60 doctors who had specialized in children's medicine. The name of the organization reflects the medical support for children and the specifics of pediatrics. There are 60,000 members. The board is elected by the members who are divided into 10 geographic areas. It is not to be confused with the anti-gay dissident organization American College of Pediatrics (ACP).

target

The aim of the organization is to make optimal physical, mental and socially adequate health and quality of life accessible to all babies, children, adolescents and young adults.

Members

Members ( Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics ) must be certified in Pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics , American Osteopathic Board of Pediatrics , the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, or the La Corporation Professionelle de Medicins du Quebec . Members who are not resident in the United States or Canada are admitted as Corresponding Fellows .

Controversy

AAP has campaigned for stricter gun controls in the past and is a partner of the Campaign for Children's Health Care .

In February 2002, the AAP published a survey that showed that same-sex partnerships do not negatively affect a child's development, but rather the relationship between the partners and the interaction in the family. At the same time, she published a statement for the legal possibility of an adoption of a biological or adopted child by the other partner in a same-sex partnership for the benefit of the child, whose status with this partner is thereby secured and offers security ( rainbow family ).

Pediatricians who reject homosexuality and who do not agree with it at all then founded the American College of Pediatrics (ACP), which has a very similar name, in October 2002 . This sees itself in the Judeo-Christian tradition, but is open to pediatricians of all faiths. The number of members is estimated at 200 in 2010. There is a close personal relationship with the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH) in that five of the seven members of the Pediatric Psychosocial Development Committee are or were leading members of NARTH ( A. Dean Byrd , Joseph Nicolosi , George Alan Rekers , Arthur A. Goldberg and Rick Fitzgibbons). They were particularly noticeable in April 2010 with their website Facts About Youth and a related mailing to school principals. The self-assessment of the website as a “non-political, non-religious” presentation of current facts on the topic is not accepted by critics, but is seen as a one-sided presentation with old research results and a dominance of reparative therapy . The AAP also criticized the site, and three scholars ( Gary Remafedi , Francis Collins , Warren Throckmorton) have publicly criticized incorrect interpretations of their works.

In 2012, the AAP published a position paper on the circumcision of male newborns , which found that the health benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks. Although the benefits are not so great to recommend circumcision as the standard treatment for male infants, the decision should be left to the parents and the operation should be paid for by the health insurance company. 38 mainly European opponents of circumcision from the medical field criticized this position as “culturally influenced”. The AAP's conclusions differed from those in other parts of the western world, including Europe, Canada and Australia. The health benefits claimed are questionable or minor and likely of little public health relevance in a Western social context. In any case, the advantages are not compelling reasons for an operation on boys who are not yet able to consent . The critics accuse the AAP of taking a more pro-circumcision position with its reassessment of the health aspects.

In 2010, the AAP identified the legalization of the genital nick or ritual nick as a possible alternative to a complete rejection of female circumcision

"However, the ritual nick suggested by some pediatricians is not physically harmful and is much less extensive than routine newborn male genital cutting. There is reason to believe that offering such a compromise may build trust between hospitals and immigrant communities, save some girls from undergoing disfiguring and life-threatening procedures in their native countries, and play a role in the eventual eradication of FGC. "

Publications

The organ of the association is the monthly journal Pediatrics , which has been published since 1948 .
