The AAA ( triple-A ), with its full name American Automobile Association , is the largest traffic club in the USA with 53 million members and thus the American counterpart to the German ADAC with which it cooperates.

The club was founded on March 4, 1902 in Cleveland, Ohio . The main requirement was to build better roads. The members are organized in local and regional groups, which in turn form the actual AAA. The AAA has published road maps since 1905 and hotel guides since 1917. Roadside assistance was offered from 1915.

The club was also active as a motorsport association until 1955 , which announced national championships, but this was discontinued after serious accidents (in Indianapolis and Le Mans ). The United States Automobile Club took over the motorsport activities.

Despite lobbying for the automobile, the AAA supported the former 55 mph limit. Foreign tourists also benefit from the AAA's “Show Your Card & Save” program, its cards and guides, provided they are members of the cooperation partners The Automobile Association ( United Kingdom ), the Canadian Automobile Association or the ADAC .

Today the club is a corporation based in Heathrow (Florida) .
