Amherst is a city in the west of the southeastern Canadian province of Nova Scotia and about three kilometers from the border with the province of New Brunswick . Amherst is the largest city in Cumberland County and the county seat of government.

Due to its location in the geographical center of the Atlantic provinces of Canada, the city of Amherst is economically important for the movement of goods between New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

history

Initially, the region was inhabited by Mi'kmaq Indians, who called the area Nemcheboogwek ( Eng . To go up the sloping ground ). The first European settlers were Acadians who founded the village of Les Planches in 1672 . After the Acadians were driven out by the British, they founded the present-day city of Amherst in 1764, three kilometers from the original settlement. The city was named by Colonel Joseph Morse , the first British settler, in honor of Jeffrey Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst , Commander in Chief of the British Forces in America.

After the American Revolution , British loyalists settled in the city.

Russian revolutionary Leon Trotsky was held in an internment camp in Amherst after he was arrested in Halifax in 1917.
