Amselgrund with Amselsee, locomotive and the valley guard

The Amselgrund is the valley of the Grünbach, also known as the Amselgrundbach , in the heart of Saxon Switzerland . It leads from Rathewalde downstream to Niederrathen . The hiker enters the wild and romantic valley through the Rathener Felsenkessel with its bizarre rock formations. Tourist highlights are the Amselsee and the Amselfall , which trickles over the grotto known as the Amselloch . The ground, which is rich in trees, is surrounded by a rocky backdrop. In the west the goose rocks rise, in the south the field stones with the Turkish head and in the east the honey stones with the distinctive "locomotive" rise . The striking rock Talwächter rises above an already deep spur near the valley floor .

While it is more like a gorge in the upper area, the valley profile between the confluence of the Schwedenlöcher and Niederrathen presents itself as a steep cut into the terrain. Current ripples can be observed in the stream bed . Above the Amselfall, large, fallen sandstone blocks block the watercourse, so that the Grünbach, which usually has little water, has to find its way past the side.

The area of the Amselgrund between the Wehlgrund junction and a little above the Amselfall lies within the Saxon Switzerland National Park .
