history

On October 31, 1841, the first rural community order for the province of Westphalia was introduced. The previous administrative districts and mayor's offices were retained as administrative districts. At the head of the office was a bailiff who was appointed by the government.

The Schmallenberg office was created in 1841 from the former mayor's office Schmallenberg and the parishes of Oberkirchen and Grafschaft . In 1844 the community of Wormbach was added from the Fredeburg office . The next largest administrative unit was the Meschede district . In 1920 the community Fleckenberg was formed from parts of Wormbach and Grafschaft . From this point on, the office consisted of the city of Schmallenberg and four communities.

In 1894, the bailiff Ferdinand von Papen (1852-1897) proposed the construction of an office building at an official meeting. After the approval of the assembly, the building plans were carried out by the builder Sander from Hagen. On January 1, 1897, the office building was ready for occupancy after a year and a half of construction. 25 years later the building was already too small, so that bailiff Kraß received the order for an extension and renovation. The renovation draft was created by the architect Theodor Balzer . In 1923 the extension was ready to move into.

In 1961 the office had a population of 12,382 people with an area of 164.59 km².

As a result of the " Law on the reorganization of the municipalities and districts of the Sauerland / Paderborn area " of November 5, 1974, the local association was dissolved on December 31, 1974. The entire administrative area with 14,670 inhabitants fell to the enlarged town of Schmallenberg.
