The Amundsen Gulf ( English Amundsen Gulf ) is a gulf in the Canadian Northwest Territories , located between Banks Island , Victoria Island and the mainland. It is about 400 km long and about 150 km wide up to the Beaufortsee .

The Amundsen Gulf was explored between 1903 and 1906 by the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen . The gulf is located at the western end of the famous Northwest Passage , a route from the Atlantic to the Pacific .

Few people live on the shores of the Gulf, but there are a few towns and cities, including Sachs Harbor , Ulukhaktok, and Paulatuk .
