Anadolu Efes Spor Kulübü (until 2011 Efes Pilsen Spor Kulübü ) is the most successful Turkish basketball club , based in Istanbul .

history

Efes Pilsen was founded in 1976 when it took over the financially troubled second division club Kadiköyspor. In 1978 Efes Pilsen rose to the first Turkish basketball league without a single defeat. In the 1978/79 season, the club celebrated its first championship in the first division.

The club celebrated its greatest successes in the 1990s. In addition to numerous national titles, Efes Pilsen was also able to establish itself on an international level.

On March 16, 1993 Efes Pilsen reached the final of the European Cup Winners' Cup in Turin , which was lost against Greek opponent Aris Saloniki with 50:48.

In 1996, three years after the first final game, Efes Pilsen became the first Turkish club team to win the Korać Cup . The final against the Italian opponent Stefanel Milano was played in two games. The first game in Istanbul on March 6, 1996 Efes won 76-68. Efes Pilsen lost the second leg on March 13th in Milan with 70:77, but was one point ahead in the overall standings and was able to take the trophy back to Istanbul. The squad of the winning team included u. a. Petar Naumoski, Ufuk Sarica (coach at Efes Pilsen from the 2010/11 season), Murat Evliyaoğlu, Mirsad Türkcan, Volkan Aydin and Hüseyin Beşok. The roster also included Power Forward and Rucker Park legend Conrad McRae , who died on July 10, 2000 at the Orlando Magic summer camp in Los Angeles as a result of a heart attack .

The record champions of Turkey won 13 championship titles and the Turkish Cup nine times.

The club has produced many important players such as: B. Hedo Türkoğlu and Mehmet Okur . Türkoğlu retired from the NBA in 2015, while Okur retired in 2012. Okur last played for the New Jersey Nets. Well-known players in Europe such as Mirsad Türkcan and Hüseyin Beşok also come from the club's youth department.

Before the 2011/12 season, the club name was changed to Anadolu Efes SK. The name change became necessary because the Turkish legislature had passed stricter regulations regarding the advertising of alcohol and tobacco. The beer brand Efes Pilsen was therefore no longer allowed to be used in the club name.
