The Andaman barn owl ( Tyto deroepstorffi ) is a species from the genus of barn owls that occurs only on the Andamans . It has long been considered a subspecies of the barn owl , but is viewed as an independent species in more recent literature. Its first describer, who assigned it to another genus as Strix De-Reopstorffi , published the article anonymously in 1875.
features
The Andaman barn owl is very similar to the barn owl that also occurs in Central Europe, but the colors are more contrasting. It reaches a body length of 30 to 36 centimeters and thus corresponds in body size to a barn owl. The top of the body is dark brown with reddish brown spots. White spots, on the other hand, are missing. The wings and tail are relatively short. The breast is yellow-brown with dark spots. The lower abdomen is whitish. In contrast to the barn owl, the face veil is not grayish, the edge around the face veil is relatively wide and orange-brown. The toes are much stronger than those of the barn owl.
Very little is known about the way of life of the Andaman Barn Owl. Presumably, it occupies an ecological niche on this island similar to that of barn owls on the mainland.
