Andranik Teymourian (born March 6, 1983 in Tehran ) is a former Iranian football player . He belongs to the Armenian minority in Iran and is currently the only Iranian national player of the Christian faith .
Career
Teymourian played in his youth and in his younger years as a professional for four different clubs in his hometown Tehran, most recently with FC Oghab until 2004 . The midfielder then moved to the Abu Moslem Mashhad club, known for its youth work, in Iran's second largest city, where he made his breakthrough in the Iranian first division .
Andranik Teymourian was discovered very early on for the national selection of Iran and went through all youth national teams. On August 24, 2005 he had his first appearance in the Iranian senior team and was then used regularly. Accordingly, he was also in Iran's World Cup squad for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . There he also played all three games in his country and was able to convince despite being eliminated in the preliminary round.
After the World Cup, the English Premier League club Bolton Wanderers showed interest in the young Iranian star and secured his services for two years. Then on June 12, 2008 he moved within the Premier League to Fulham free of charge . In 2010 he returned to Iran, where he signed a contract for Tractor Sazi Tabriz . After one season he moved to league rivals Esteghlal Tehran , before moving to Qatar for the 2012/13 season for Al-Kharitiyath SC . In 2013 he returned to Esteghlal Tehran, and in 2014 to Tractor Sazi Tabriz.
Teymourian's older brother Serjik (born May 29, 1975) played from 1999 to 2000 for the then German second division club 1. FSV Mainz 05 , but was only used eight times.
Teymourian was also nominated for the 2014 World Cup , for which the Iranian national team qualified. He was used in all three preliminary round matches and completed the international appearances 79 to 81.
In April 2015 he became the captain of the national team.
