Andreas Cesana

Andreas Cesana (born March 12, 1951 in Basel ; † May 8, 2019 ) was a Swiss philosopher and head of the Studium generale at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

Life

From 1970 to 1979 Cesana studied philosophy, general history and Swiss history at the University of Basel , where he also received his doctorate in 1979 with a thesis on Johann Jakob Bachofen . From 1979 to 1986 he was an assistant at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Basel, where he joined in 1986 with a thesis on the philosophy of history habilitated . From 1986 to 1996 he was a scientific librarian and subject librarian for philosophy, theology and religious studies at the public library of the University of Basel . He also taught at the University of Basel and was appointed associate professor in 1992. In 1996 he was appointed head of the Studium generale and professor of philosophy at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . There he was a board member of the association of "Friends of Mainz University" and chairman of the board of the " Johannes Gutenberg Endowed Professorship ".

The focus of his publications and lectures were the philosophy of history, the existential philosophy , the philosophy of culture , argumentation theory , intercultural philosophy , ethics and bioethics and issues of interdisciplinarity . As head of the editorial office of the Critical Complete Edition of Jacob Burckhardt's works and as co-editor (since 1988) of Johann Jakob Bachofen's Collected Works, another focus of his work was editing work. Cesana was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the Jacob Burckhardt Foundation (Basel), a member of the board of directors of the "Jacob Burckhardt Talks on Castelen" in Augst (Switzerland) and director of the International Association of Jaspers Societies.
